Located about 20 miles (32km) northeast of Two Harbors, Split Rock Lighthouse State Park is one of eight state parks that make up Minnesota’s North Shore experience along Lake Superior.

Primary natural features

Split Rock Lighthouse State Park is primarily known for stunning views of it’s name sake, Split Rock Light House providing exceptional north shore experiences. Hiking trails up close and personal to the shoreline of Lake Superior run through this state park.

Other interesting facts

Split Rock Lighthouse was so popular with tourists that even after technology made it obsolete, it kept running until in 1969 the station officially closed after nearly 6 decades of service.

About the park

The park offers hiking, camping and access to Split Rock Lighthouse. Come for the day, come for the weekend, it really doesn’t matter which just make sure Split Rock State park makes your list of North Shore experiences.

Visitor Center
MN Historical Society History Center
Operated by the Minnesota Historical Society, the Visitor Center is open May 15 – October 15, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. October 16 – May 14, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursdays through Mondays.

Interpretive Exhibit
MN Historical Society History Center
Exhibits, films and programs conducted in the Minnesota Historical Society History Center. Also includes a gift shop.

Historic Site
Split Rock Lighthouse Historic Site
Operated by the Minnesota Historical Society, the site is open May 15 – October 15, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. October 16 – May 14, Lighthouse and historic buildings are closed. Visitor Center and Museum Store are open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursdays through Mondays.

Tours

Available May 15 through Oct. 15.

  • Rentals: Snowshoes in park office.
  • Firewood: At Park Office
    Available year-round.
  • Ice Sales: At Park Office
    Available May through October.
